St. Johns Chiropractic Clinic's Top Tips for Migraines

Migraines can be a debilitating experience and affects about one out of seven people. Here are some of our top tips for naturally managing your migraines.

  1. Ginger: A study showed it to perform as well as Sumatriptan (a popular migraine medication). Mix 1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon of ginger powder with water at the first signs of your migraine.

  2. Lavender Aroma Therapy: apply 2-3 drops of lavender essential oil to the top lip at the first signs of your migraines. A study showed it to reduce headache severity as well as the additional symptoms of migraines (nausea, light, smell, and sound sensitivity).

  3. Magnesium: a very common deficiency. We recommend trying to start incorporating whole foods high in magnesium like dark leafy greens*, pumpkin seeds, almonds, and >70% cocoa dark chocolate into your diet. *If you are on a blood thinner, do not increase your consumption of dark leafy greens as they contain high levels of vitamin K which can counteract some blood thinning medications. Another great option for increasing magnesium is by taking Epsom salt baths which may further benefit headaches through the muscle relaxing effects of a warm bath. Finally, you could also take a magnesium supplement.
